Podcast Special Ed. 47: Kouhei Matsunaga Live on Rare Frequency 08/12/10

Kouhei Matsunaga is an electronic musician from Osaka, Japan. A prolific artist, he is best-known for his collaborative projects, such as his sharply noisy techno duo NHK or his hip-hop production work with Sensational. His music runs the gamut from from noise to techno to abstract ambient to hip-hop. On August 12, Kouhei visited the studio and played an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink set that featured a broad range of material from current projects.

COMPONENT AMB PROCESSOS: PERSPECTIVES SOBRE MÚSICA GENERATIVA I DE SISTEMES #1

A càrrec de Mark Fell i Joe Gilmore.

COMPOSING WITH PROCESS: PERSPECTIVES ON GENERATIVE AND SYSTEMS MUSIC #1

"Continue"

Curated by Mark Fell and Joe Gilmore. Narrated by Connie Treanor.

'Continue' investigates how music can be generated using a wide range of techniques. These range from very simple procedural systems, such as Mika Vainio's 'Twin Bleebs' which features two repeating events going in and out of phase, to David Tudor's 'Neural Synthesis No.9' – a more complex electronic system which explores indeterminacy through the emulation of neural activity. The programme also looks at music which has been composed using formal geometric and mathematical rules, for example: Martin Neukom's 'Studie 18' and Thomas Brinkmann's '27 Fibonacci Numbers in a Binary Chain'.

EVOL is a computer music group started in 1996. At the core of the project is Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, an artist and composer living and working in Barcelona. Since the late nineties, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and his collaborators have been producing what they call "computer music for hooligans", inspired by fractal geometry, quantum theory and rave culture. A vortex of generative basslines, air horns, strangely familiar vocalisations and noise, their music displays a radical and playful approach to algorithmic composition. Their work has been published on international record labels like Entr'acte, Mego, Presto!? or their own ALKU.

"...a razor sharp atonalism that follows its own sense of abandoned humor" (Igloo Mag)
"...a brief record that catches the listener off guard with its pseudo-musical, unpredictable nature." (Michael Tau, Vital Weekly)
"reinforced concrète!" (Joe Gerhardt, Semiconductor Films)
"...sounds like R2D2 being raped" (Graham Sharp)
"Simply too much to be true" (Vital Weekly)
"Un universo a metà tra rilettura ironica e applicazione da studiosi matematici, di dificile penetrazione e altrettanto ardua commerciabilità." (Blow Up)
"Booty, sexy music" (Pedro Soler, curator/director of Hangar)
"Generative violence" (RDL Magazine)
"If you've ever wondered what the Carl Stalling-indebted score to a circa-2109 Pixar plotless cartoon about robotic, hyper house-mice might sound like..." (Grooves)
"Punani Rubberist [...] sounds like Parmeggiani doing a soundtrack to Backdoor Sluts 9." (Han Van Den Hoof)
"...this is what I imagine Chewbacca would sound like after a heavy night on ketamine." (Stephen Sharp)
